Job Opening: NFL Seeks Labor Relations Counsel

The current collective bargaining agreement between the National Football League and NFL players is coming to an end. Maybe that has something to do with the NFL looking to beef up its labor relations lawyer count.

The league just posted a job opening for Labor Relations Counsel. It is seeking an individual who has a strong litigation background and at least seven years of experience in federal and/or state litigation and/or experience in labor relations.

It is a travel intensive job based in New York City. The job requires extensive travel for hearings, depositions and meetings and indicates that it is within a high-stress environment.

The NFL labor relations counsel job duties entail:

• Litigate grievances on behalf of the league and member clubs under the collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association. Candidate must have trial and/or appellate experience.
• Assist in collective bargaining with the NFL’s on-field unionized work forces.
• Provide legal counsel and support to NFL’s health and safety committees
• Provide counsel to the league and clubs regarding rights and obligations under the Salary Cap system
• Draft and review policy directives for NFL players and Clubs.
• Review data and prepare reports regarding the administration of NFL policies.
• Interact with outside law firms, consultants and others involved in the administration of NFL policies and/or litigation of claims.
• Prepare and deliver presentations to NFL players and Club officials.
• Represent the league in player appeals of discipline under the league’s drug, steroid and conduct policies.
