The mobile gaming market is suggested to be worth $70 billion. With so many people playing mobile games and contributing to that astronomical figure, consumers may be more prone to purchase phones that provide a competitive advantage in game play.
In fact, it could be a good advertising tool for Apple and Samsung in selling newer versions of its phones.
Mobile esports leader Skillz has released a new study that digs into the question of what phones give players a competitive edge. It analyzed over 800 million mobile esports tournaments to come to what may be an obvious conclusion — the larger the screen size, the more likely the user is to perform well in a competition.
Specifically, Skillz players using larger screen smartphones win games as much as 6% more often than people with smaller screens. It means a lot in the world of mobile esports according to Skillz.
“Upgrading from the iPhone 6S to an iPhone X really made a difference,” says Jennifer Tu, a Harvard University junior and the seventh highest earning mobile esports athlete in 2017. “The extra screen space and the better display help me see opportunities in my matches that I might otherwise miss.”
Apple and Samsung have begun to market more to gamers, including Samsung’s partnership with Epic Games to provide Fortnite skins for Note 9 purchasers. Additionally, Razer and ASUS are developing phones intended to optimize the gaming experience. The bottom-line is that when it comes to mobile gaming, size does matter.
