Job Opening: NFL Seeks Senior Vice President, Labor Litigation

A couple of weeks ago, we highlighted an opening for Labor Relations Counsel at the NFL. Now, the league is kicking it up a notch with its posting to fill the opening of Senior Vice President, Labor Litigation. This is a job for someone who likes to be an adversary and fight to the finish on behalf of his or her client.

The qualifications are steep. A minimum of twenty years of relevant litigation experience is required. Federal trial experience is preferred.

The job is based in New York City. Candidates should expect to be placed in a very relied upon role, taking the lead on grievances, arbitrations, System Arbitrator proceedings and all other litigation involving active and retired NFL players and clubs.

Duties include:

  • Acquire and demonstrate substantive mastery of CBA injury and non-injury grievances and System Arbitrator proceeding precedent and procedures.
  • Represent the NFL and member clubs in grievances, disputes, arbitration and litigation.
  • Develop and manage a team of in-house counsel and litigation support personnel responsible for representing the NFL and member clubs in litigation under the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Supervise daily grievance calendar and lead bi-annual scheduling meetings and settlement conferences with NFL Players Association.
  • Prepare legal and advice memoranda for clubs regarding all labor relations matters.
  • Evaluate, hire and oversee changes to existing arbitrator and neutral physician panels.
  • Independently develop and maintain working relationships with labor union representatives.
  • Present to team owners and NFL executives on legal developments and initiatives.
  • Facilitate communication within and across the department.
  • Supervise and manage outside counsel in defense of league and clubs in matters filed in federal and state court.
